Samsung’s upcoming amazing smartphone accessory

Not a wearable this time

Creating tiny holograms using a smartphone screen can be a DIY project for most till near future, which can be accomplished through tutorials from YouTube, but soon will not. Samsung, the Korean electronics star, recently got its patent granted which comprised the technology of creating holograms through smartphone screen by docking it onto a Docking station. Samsung has been working on the same technology for past few years and applied for the patent in 2018 which was granted on September 2019 by USPTO.

Holograms

The term hologram was uncommon until the release of few Sci-fi movies which demonstrated the same as visual 3D projections of objects into space. In simple words, Holograms are just visuals of a 3D object floating in the space formed by light rays projected from a source through some medium.

Samsung’s Patent

The images from the patent reveal something amazing which people have already seen on movies at the augmented scale. Samsung’s newly developed technology not only produces 3D holograms but also ensures to provide interaction with those holograms which open the door for a plethora of possibilities and scope of using the same tech elsewhere.

Understanding the working: The tech works on the simple principles like diffraction and reflection of light. The docking station works on three things out of which one isn’t possessed by it – smartphone with curved edge screens like Galaxy S6, a half mirror and a retroreflective element. To work successfully it is important that all three elements are placed at the proper position and at some pre-decided angle concerning each other. The worry for the same is handed over to the design of the tech which is modeled to hold all three elements at predefined place and angle.

The unique arrangement will then project the desired result into space above the smartphone. Moreover, the tech which resembles air bars will allow manipulating and interacting with the projected visuals by mere hand gestures.

The image of Patent illustrates one such act of playing a song “Gangnam Style – by PSY” on the smartphone using hand gestures on the projected hologram. (At some instant It may feel like being Tony Stark playing with some extra cool holograms but at 10X smaller scale).

Scope

If commercially launched

  • Tech will assist in poping up images and videos into space above the smartphone.
  • Allow controlling the volume and playback without touching the touchscreen.
  • Notifications from social media applications can be viewed from far when the phone is lying horizontally on a desk or table beside the bed.

Samsung is intending to use the same tech in upcoming smart speakers, Flip covers or also intends in replacing heads up displays on some cars.

Why not add more to it?

The Samsung will also add NFC connectivity to speedily turn on the hologram mode on the smartphone when it comes in contact with the docking station.

Moreover, the same docking station will charge the smartphone but the type of power source is still a mystery. The probability of DC power source outweighs the AC, as it will transform it to an all in one accessory (which facilitate as a Flip cover, power bank and the most important projecting station).

Launch

Given that the global market has space for such tech, Samsung will definitely launch the docking station soon or maybe accompanying the upcoming Galaxy S11.
