DJI Mavic Mini drone
Lights – Camera – Fly
As the name suggests the DIJ Mavic Mini drone is a drone recently launched by Dji that weighs under 250 g and comes in incredibly small size. The drone’s weight is the most noteworthy thing as it is highly difficult for a drone to weigh less than 250g. The DJI Mavic mini holds a camera below for filming and imaging purposes. The DJI Mavic Mini is exempted from the laws and rules which are forced on unmanned vehicles weighing 250 grams and above in the USA and other countries.
Not just light and tiny, the Mavic Mini is also a capable camera drone that comes with an affordable price tag. The camera below is nothing great but the mounting is which is not common, the camera is held by a 3-axis stabilized gimbal and even after the attachment it weighs such less while its superior version with a 2-axis gimbal weighs more than the Mavic mini.

Drone
The DJI Mavic Mini is such small that it can fit within the palm of an adult human being complimenting its ultra-lightweight. The ultra-lightweight however is at the cost of losing some great hardware. The Drone does not have an obstacle avoidance sensor unlike its predecessors or the superior ones that weigh heavier. The drone instead has two vision positioning sensor for that job. The blades of the drone can be unpaired using the bundled screwdriver and with ease. The drone can reach the height up to 120 feet from the ground and can be set at heights like 40, 60, 80, 100, and 120. The battery capacity of the drone is 2400 mAh which can give 30 minutes of flight time.
The camera beneath
The DJI Mavic Mini holds a 1/2.3” CMOS sensor of 12 MP camera resolution mounted on the 3-axis stabilized gimbal. The camera does not meet the expectation of 4K recording at 30 fps but instead can record at the maximum resolution of 2.7K at 30 fps or 1080p at 60 fps with the bitrate of 40 Mbps. The camera offers 83° FoV and comes with a fixed aperture of f/2.8 that struggles in low lighting conditions. The ISO range of the camera is 100 -3200. The drawback of imaging is that it cannot save RAW images and photos will be saved in the JPEG format only. There is no provision like internal storage to capture images or record videos that can only be saved on a micro SD placed in the slot below in Mavic Mini near the battery portal and there is a micro USB port for charging.
Controller and the App
The size of the drone is smaller than its remote controller in folded condition. The controller comes with no display but other adjustable can be controlled by the constrained or say an incomplete (part) version of the DJI Go 4, called the DJI Fly app on a smartphone that was recently developed. The app shows a simple battery icon to make the pilot aware of the energy left or flight time left within the drone. The photo mode lets the user capture timed images and in auto or manual mode. The user can alter the exposure compensations levels, resolution, frame rates and can even take shots in the video mode while recording. The same app now lacks things like Active Track, TapFly, and course Lock. The removal of such features will definitely bother loyal and old customers who became addicted to those convenience improving features but for new customers, it will be a no big deal. The drone features geofencing to restrict the range of the drone to reduce the chances of losing connectivity, move away from restricted areas, and return to the launch position when the battery starts running low.
Price of DJI Mavic Mini
The DIJ Mavic Mini is available in the USA at the price tag of 399 USD (roughly 30,000 INR) and will soon be available in India at a similar price. The launch is expected in the first quarter of 2020 in India.
