History
In the beginning of December 1895, the mechanic Václav Laurin and the bookseller Václav Klement, both bicycle enthusiasts, started manufacturing bicycles of their own design, patriotically named Slavia in the nationalist atmosphere at the end of the 19th century. A few years later, in 1899, the Laurin and Klement Co. began producing motorcycles, which were soon successful and gained several racing victories. After initial experiments at the turn of the century, the production of motorcycles was gradually replaced by automobiles from 1905 onwards.
Like the motorcycles, the first Laurin and Klement automobile, the Voiturette A, was a huge success, later becoming the archetype of the Czech automobile maker. It soon formed a stable position for the company in the developing international automobile market, so that the Company could start operating on a wide scale. The volume of the production increased and soon exceeded the potential of a private enterprise, and in 1907 the founders of the company initiated conversion to a joint-stock company. The international character of ŠKODA's operations became increasingly important. The production facilities were extended constantly and after 1914, ŠKODA took part in the production for the armed forces.
Due to the country's economic development, a joint venture with a strong industrial partner became essential in the 1920s in order to strengthen and modernise the Company, which was at that time producing numerous types of passenger cars, trucks, buses, airplane engines and agricultural machinery. In 1925, fusion with the Pilsen ŠKODA Co. was accomplished, marking the end of the Laurin and Klement trademark. In early 1930s, the automotive business was again organised as a separate joint-stock company within the ŠKODA Group (Automobile Industry Co., ASAP). After the crisis, the company achieved a breakthrough with the Type ŠKODA Popular.
The German occupation in 1939 to 1945 caused a considerable disruption in the history of the company, which was integrated into the industrial structure of the German Empire. The civilian production-programme was immediately limited and production was turned to its needs. In the course of a large-scale nationalisation, which began immediately after the end of the war, the Company became a national enterprise named AZNP in 1946. Within the political and economic changes of that time, it acquired the monopoly of passenger car production.
Based on the traditional production processes and past success, the Czechoslovak economy managed to maintain a relatively good standard in the post/socialist period for several decades, despite the changes brought about by planned economy and unduly rapid growth. This standard only became questionable towards the end of the 1960s due to development of new technology in the western world. The permanent stagnation of the economy started after the 70s, also affecting the Mlada Boleslav automobile manufacturer in spite of the company's leading position in the East Europe market. Production grew again only when the model range ŠKODA Favorit went into production in 1987.
After the political changes of 1989, under the new market economy conditions, the Government of the Czechoslovak Republic and the management of ŠKODA began to search for a strong foreign partner whose experience and investments would be capable of securing the long-range international competitiveness of the company. In December 1990, the government decided on cooperation with the German Volkswagen Group. The ŠKODA - Volkswagen joint venture began to operate on 16 April, 1991 under the name ŠKODA, automobilová a.s., becoming the fourth brand of the Volkswagen Group alongside VW, AUDI & SEAT.
Environment
Man Needs an Automobile as well as Nature
The environment is irreplaceable by man and, as such, it must be protected and preserved for the present and future generations. Aware of this fact, ŠKODA Auto, being the largest company in the Czech Republic, therefore tries to be an example to other companies. Environmental approach to development and production of new vehicles, as well as services, form the base of the company's business strategy. ŠKODA vehicles meet most of the environment-friendly criteria, and some models even meet the EU4 emission standard. Likewise, all of ŠKODA Auto developmental and production processes comply with the legislative standards of the economically advanced countries of the European Union, and the newly prepared principles of old automobile recycling.
Strictest Standards are Their Norm
ŠKODA Auto's strategy in the area of environmental protection is coded in a document titled Environmental Policy, which contains the company's basic environmental activities and objectives. As early as 2000, ŠKODA Auto launched an environmental management system making it part of the company's overall management. The system relies on the premise that each employee should adopt partial responsibility for protection of the environment. A confirmation of the company's adherence to environmental principles in all its activities - development, production, sales, services, and production of spare parts - is ŠKODA Auto’s conformity to ISO 14001, the strictest standard of them all, and the international Certificate RW TUV received in December 2001. For ŠKODA Auto and its authorised dealers, it has become a matter of prestige to win the Green Seal, a certificate proving that the company’s service activities demonstrate a friendly approach to the environment and meets the highly demanding criteria of an environmental audit.
Air, Water and Soil Protection
Wastewater – All water purification facilities in the factory conform to the strictest standards. A high degree of purification is ensured by modern purification facilities, built separately for individual types of pollution. Calculated on a per vehicle basis, the water consumption and the volume of wastewater have dropped to one quarter of those measured in 1991, the year of merging with the VW Konzern.
Land recultivation – In the area of soil and underground protection ŠKODA Auto has successfully implemented a number of measures and programs. The company devotes particular efforts to sanitation of old environmental burdens, including recultivation of waste dumps and running waterbeds.
Recycling – Frame agreements with suppliers and companies specialising in automobile waste processing lay down the company's concrete steps in the area of waste collection and subsequent processing. This applies, above all, to car windows, batteries, tires, and plastic components. Using the services of specialised companies, all other waste, such as oil, is collected and recycled.
Waste – ŠKODA Auto's strategy in the area of waste focuses primarily on prevention, quantity minimisation, and preferred recycling. Since 1991, the volume of waste per vehicle has decreased by nearly one half. Recycling or reuse applies to 84% of waste materials, such as metals, paper, plastic, car batteries, glass, or abradants. The company handles all waste processing on a contractual basis with specialised professional companies.
Energy – The environmental issues of the third millennium require specific approach to energy consumption: the company is supplied all types of energy by a modern Ško-ENERGO, a thermal plant equipped with state-of-the-art technology for combined heat and energy production based on fluid combustion of high-energy black coal. For example, the volume of flue ash generated by the plant has dropped to less than one quarter of the original volume! Moreover, the new thermal plant supplies heat to nearly 10,000 households in Mladá Boleslav.
Automobiles and the Environment
Noise – Noise is one of the unfavorable factors affecting the environment. ŠKODA Auto, however, has no problem keeping up with the progressive legislation of today. Contrary to earlier vehicles, in today's model lines, e.g., the Fabia and the Octavia, the noise level – both internal and external – has dropped by nearly 10 decibels.
Emissions – Carbon, nitrogen, and solid particles emission is a serious form of environmental pollution. ŠKODA Auto fits its vehicles with engines that not only meet strict EU3 emission limits, in effect since 2001, but also the EU4 emission standards.
Fuel consumption – Low fuel consumption always is a meaningful aspect of environmental protection. Engineering designers at ŠKODA Auto take many measures to reach low fuel consumption through engine design optimisation, improved aerodynamics and weight reduction.
Making use of progressive technologies and new technical solution makes ŠKODA Auto one of the most advanced automobile manufacturers. For instance, its TDI Diesel engines have very low fuel consumption under all operating conditions, thanks to the pressurised pump-nozzle injection system. The economical and environment-friendly ŠKODA engines account for some of the most modern diesel engines made today.
Technology Focused on Safety and Environment
Modern Engineering – Application of the latest scientific findings and technical devices, as well as modern processes and technologies enable ŠKODA Auto engineers to reduce the time required for developing new models, and to respond more flexibly to environmental legislation.
Environmental Liquids – ŠKODA Auto dedicates considerable attention to the quality of automotive liquids and their environmental properties. All motor, transmission, and hydraulic oils, cooling liquids, as well as window- washer and anti-freeze liquids undergo demanding tests and trials. All liquids used in ŠKODA vehicles meet the prescribed technical parameters, the strict criteria of the relevant legislation, and the Konzern’s environmental standards.
Information Data Exchange – No manufacturer today would be able to promote a new model in the market without electronic control units, circuits, or systems ensuring that the product meets the current requirements for quality, technical sophistication, road properties, general safety, environmental safety, or comfortable operation.
For example, ŠKODA's modern, electronic, automatic transmission, fitted with the Fuzzy Logic system, shifts gears automatically depending on road properties and the driver's mode of driving. Gear shifting thus optimised helps keep fuel consumption low and eliminates unnecessary noise.
Philosophy
ŠKODA Auto's philosophy of employing the latest technology to ensure that the cars are built to the highest standard and are available at attractive prices has a long tradition. This commitment also extends to the best quality, the best services and concern for environment. Family, friends, hobbies and work are all important aspects of creating your personal mobility. ŠKODA Auto's philosophy is to make your life opportunities wider. As part of this commitment, ŠKODA Auto offers the roomiest cars in their class, providing luxury, value for money and people-oriented technology. Enjoy the moment. It has so much to offer.
Social Policy
ŠKODA Auto is making an effort to create a working environment which supports motivation, high performance and creativity of the employees while respecting their individuality and varying needs.
This approach also has support at all-concerned levels. Practical consequences are subsequently applied in the individual areas, regardless of whether this concerns HR policy, working environment, working safety, protection of the health of employees, education and personal development of employees or provided social services.
ŠKODA Design
Design Center
Made of glass, concrete and steel, the ŠKODA Auto Design Center is a modern, unconventionally conceived structure that stands out without being overwhelmingly dominant. Built in the spirit of a new architectural philosophy, it is a harmoniously composed structure aiming to express simplicity, compactness and compatibility with the attributes typical to ŠKODA. The building is divided with glass partitions that can be moved to create a variety of interior arrangements. This variability enables designers and engineers to concentrate on their work while sustaining visual communication with their colleagues.
The monochromatic character of the glass and concrete structure artfully contrasts with the colourful work environment. In 1999, the original Design Center received recognition as the Structure of the Year.
New Architectural Icon
A professional team of designers, engineers and experts in other fields of specialty work in the Design Center on development of new automobiles for ŠKODA. Using drawings and models, the Exterior Division designs the external appearance, while specialists in the Interior Division elaborate on the details in the interior. In order to be able to evaluate designs realistically, a Model Shop makes life-size models from modeling clay at a 1:1 scale, which are indistinguishable from actual automobiles.
The Colour & Trim Shop designs upholstery fabrics for the seats, colours of the lacquer and all other materials to give the interior a comfortable and pleasant appearance. Workers in the CAD Design Division generate computer-based models of components (e.g., wheels), create data for subsequent machining of ŠKODA Auto components and ensure exchange of information with the relevant design units.
Designing ŠKODA Vehicles
All ŠKODA models are designed at the Design Center in Mladá Boleslav, relying on many years of tradition in technical know-how, combined with modern scientific findings and experience, as well as with the Concern's support. During this process, their designers seek perfection; passion and love for their work are manifested in every single detail of the vehicle models they create.
All ŠKODA designs derive from ŠKODA concepts and ŠKODA Auto Corporate Design. They aim visually to accentuate the virtues of ŠKODA - precision, dynamics and tradition - so that the vehicles are instantly distinguishable from other competitors' vehicles. The domineering and original mask of the cooler is one of the principal identity marks of all the three model lines of ŠKODA vehicles and a clear sign of affiliation with this trademark. Other original elements of the ŠKODA design are indentations in the front hood's profile - starting from the corners of the cooler mask, crossing the company logo in the middle, and gradually elevated towards the front windshield, where they disappear.
Automobile Design Development
Long before a new model is designed, the R and D Division begins work on the first conceptual sketches. Upon compiling draft designs, based on the Konzern's platform, the overall vehicle concept is ready for further elaboration. Simultaneously, with the development of the platform, there are various studies and comparative analyses of competitors’ vehicles under progress, in order to define optimal external and internal dimensions.
The results of the studies are then converted into sets of data called package, which are then used for creating clay design models. The models thus created are continuously checked for conformity with internal, external and ergonomic parameters, technological feasibility and compliance with current legislative regulations. The designing process includes creation of cross sections of the individual design versions and the junction points of the future body frames. During the final stage, a so-called final package is produced, a compilation of all the important parameters of the exterior and interior into a 3D model.
CAD Design
The term CAD Tuning stands for creation of 3D computer models of exteriors and interiors. This creative work forms a critical interface in every developmental process involving design and engineering. Upon approval, each new model's clay version is used for CAD tuning. Modelling is done directly on the computer according to the designer's ideas, with the aid of sketches and cross-sections. Taking all these conditions into consideration often leads to modification of the designers' original ideas.
The final version depends very much on the model maker's ability to project in space and on his cooperation with the designer and engineer. Using large-scale projections facilitates presentation of CAD data for the whole vehicle in virtual reality. They, in turn, facilitate evaluation of the presented forms and make room for recommended adjustments. Upon processing and approval, CAD data is released for machining a so-called data control model at a 1:1 scale. The model is then presented for final approval as to the form and surface of the exterior and interior.
Car Production
Only The Best for You
Only the best is good enough for their customers! The principle that company founders Laurin and Klement followed, remains in effect at ŠKODA even to this day.
This is why they pay maximum attention to all process at their company. From car development to manufacturing, sales and after-sales customer service. The reason is simple : Your satisfaction is their number one priority.
Cutting Edge Technology and People
To produce their various car models, they have built new manufacturing facilities and equipped them with the most advanced technology available to automobile manufacturers worldwide. Their employees are also leading specialists in their fields. As a result, the ŠKODA cars rolling off the production lines at their factories in the Czech Republic and abroad are of top quality and have excellent technical specifications.
Stamping
They produce ŠKODA body parts (cast parts) at three stamping factories that house 14 stamping lines as well as other production lines. Using the most advanced equipment, they can produce cast parts of the highest quality for over 1,300 Fabia bodies or 860 second-generation Octavia / Laura bodies each and every day. In order to produce high-quality cast parts, they can create even the most intricate casting tools. The tool production facility is equipped with machining centres that can fulfil complex orders without blinking an eye – such as producing stamping dyes for car side plates. This machined part could be as large as 4500 x 2500 mm weigh nearly 20 tonnes!
Welding
Top quality and matching up all parts of the car’s body perfectly during modeling – this is the principal condition for attaining a flawless final product and guaranteeing that the car’s final appearance will be impeccable. At the modern facilities in Mladá Boleslav and in Kvasiny in northern Bohemia, qualified personnel work side-by-side with hundreds of robots to weld subassemblies as well as entire car bodies with absolute precision.
Painting
It is impossible to imagine a new car without a perfect coloured coat. This is why they have built modern facilities in Mladá Boleslav and Kvasiny that maximally utilise automated and robotised manufacturing processes to paint ŠKODA cars. They also use the best quality materials that have a low environmental impact, including water-soluble topcoats.
Foundries
ŠKODA Auto has a long history of producing cast moulds and forgings for engines and gearboxes. For example, as early as 1962 they became the first in Europe to use a high-pressure pouring process to produce intricate and complex aluminium cylinder blocks. Cast moulds from the aluminium foundry, grey cast iron and forgings from the forging facility in Mladá Boleslav are used not just in other factories that are part of the VW Group, but also at a number of local and international customers’ sites. They are continuously modernizing the foundries and equipping them with the latest technology and technical equipment.
Engines and Gearboxes Production
ŠKODA Auto’s facility to produce engines, axles and gearboxes is one of the most advanced production bases within the entire VW Group. Production was launched here in 2001. They produce modern three-cylinder 1.2 HTP motors for ŠKODA, VW and Seat brand cars. Besides additional petrol and diesel motors, they also manufacture MQ 200 modern concept gearboxes for the VW Group and ŠKODA Auto. These gearboxes are notable for their ability to offer a comfortable and quiet ride. In addition, they manufacture front and rear axles for the Fabia, Laura and Roomster as well as rear axles for the Superb and Octavia at the facility.
Final Manufacturing
ŠKODA Fabia's and Laura's roll off the production line in Mladá Boleslav. The Roomster and the brand's largest model, the Superb, are manufactured at the newly reconstructed and expanded factory branch in Kvasiny. Their subsidiary factory in Vrchlabí accumulates various parts of the steadily popular Octavia as well as some individual modifications and accessories (luxury L and K, Scout model, sports RS, 4x4 etc.). They also manufacture ŠKODA cars at additional international manufacturing and congregation plants (linked to ŠKODA plants). They never shortchange the most important specification - Quality. This is why each and every car they produce is subjected to a thorough exit check-up that tests all the systems and controls the quality of the final product before being dispatched. The cars also must pass a test drive on a special track featuring various road surfaces.
You are Important to Them
They pay particular attention to the level of care their importers (retailers) devote to customers. Not just high-quality cars, but also you, their customers, deserve only the best. Visit your ŠKODA retailer and find out for yourself just how much your satisfaction with their products matters to them. And they are ready to provide you with the same high-quality services as when you purchase the car even after you become the owner of one of their models. High-quality service, emissions tests, 24-hour assistance, original parts and accessories including installation, paint and body service, wheel and tyre storage and many more services – for them, these are all just a matter of course. You are important to them!
Social Responsibility
ŠKODA Auto India produces and offers high quality and environment friendly vehicles. The specifications of which not only meet but exceeds customer expectations. Operating according to the parent company strategy, ŠKODA Auto India aims at complying with requirements and continuously improves the quality and environment management system.
As they are an organization which is obsessed with quality, they expect quality in all spheres of life especially in health and education. The step taken to improve education in the region, they have donated ŠKODA brand cars & engines to the Industrial Training Institutes for the learning and training of the students to enable them to acquire latest technology in automobile and then create a talent pool not only for SAIPL but for other automobile manufactures. This is an initiative which is serving the society at large by helping them to learn practically on the latest car technology and SAIPL is getting trained manpower from the region.
They are also an organization which is very health conscious and want their employees as well as the society to always be healthy. As an initiative they organize various health awareness camps for ŠKODA employees and for common people in nearby vicinity and the society at large.
