Tata Group Profile
Founded by Jamsetji Tata in 1868, the Tata group is a global enterprise, headquartered in India, comprising over 100 independent operating companies. The group operates in more than 100 countries across six continents, with a mission 'To improve the quality of life of the communities they serve globally, through long-term stakeholder value creation based on Leadership with Trust'.
Tata Sons is the principal investment holding company and promoter of Tata companies. Sixty-six percent of the equity share capital of Tata Sons is held by philanthropic trusts, which support education, health, livelihood generation and art and culture. In 2015-16, the revenue of Tata companies, taken together, was $103.51 billion. These companies collectively employ over 660,000 people.
Each Tata company or enterprise operates independently under the guidance and supervision of its own board of directors and shareholders. There are 29 publicly-listed Tata enterprises with a combined market capitalisation of about $116.41 billion (as on March 31, 2016). Tata companies with significant scale include Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Power, Tata Chemicals, Tata Global Beverages, Tata Teleservices, Titan, Tata Communications and Indian Hotels.
Many Tata companies have achieved global leadership in their businesses. For instance, Tata Communications is #1 international wholesale voice provider and Tata Motors is among the top ten commercial vehicle manufacturers in the world. Tata Steel is among the top fifteen best steelmakers and TCS is the second largest IT services company in the world by market cap and profit. Tata Global Beverages is the second-largest tea company in the world and Tata Chemicals is the world’s second-largest manufacturer of soda ash. Employing a diverse workforce in their operations, Tata companies have made significant local investments in different geographies.
In tandem with the increasing international footprint of Tata companies, the Tata brand is also gaining international recognition. Tata companies bring to their customers worldwide a whole host of reputed brands which touch their lives every day. Brand Finance, a UK-based consultancy firm, has valued Tata’s multi-brand portfolio at over $23 billion in 2016.
With its pioneering and entrepreneurial spirit, the Tata group has spawned several industries of national importance in India : steel, hydro-power, hospitality and airlines. The same spirit, coupled with innovativeness, has been displayed by entities such as TCS, India’s first software company, and Tata Motors, which made India’s first indigenously developed car, the Tata Indica and the smart city car, the Tata Nano. Pursuit of excellence has similarly been manifested in recent innovations like the SilentTrack technology developed by Tata Steel Europe and the next-generation Terrain Response, including infrared laser scanning to predict terrain, and Wade Aid to predict water depth, by Jaguar Land Rover.
The Tata trusts, majority shareholders of Tata Sons, have endowed institutions for science and technology, medical research, social studies and the performing arts. The trusts also provide aid and assistance to non-government organisations working in the areas of education, health care and livelihoods. Tata companies themselves undertake a wide range of social welfare activities, especially at the locations of their operations, as also deploy sustainable business practices.
Going forward, Tata companies are building multinational businesses that seek to differentiate themselves through customer-centricity, innovation, entrepreneurship, trustworthiness and values-driven business operations, while balancing the interests of diverse stakeholders including shareholders, employees and civil society.

Businesses
Tata Motors has a unique position among global leaders in the automotive segment with an unmatched range in both commercial and passenger vehicles in a well-known brand portfolio.
Commercial Vehicles
For decades, Tata Motors has led India’s commercial vehicle market from the front. Through their deep understanding of the customer’s needs, they have consistently brought innovation to this industry — with new product segments such as the sub-tonne mini truck Tata Ace as the ideal last mile delivery vehicle and the Winger mini bus for short distance passenger travel — to revolutionise the trucking landscape in the country with market-leading products, applications and services.
In their role as a game changer, they have introduced best-in-class automotive technologies in India – the globally benchmarked Prima and Ultra enabling a world-class trucking experience, in terms of performance as well as user comfort and convenience. As the fourth largest bus manufacturer globally, they provide innovatively designed and technologically superior buses for the smart cities of tomorrow. The new buses personify safety and comfort, reliability and profitability. their global subsidiaries — Daewoo Commercial Vehicles Company and Marcopolo — have only strengthened their portfolio.
As strategic partner to the Indian Armed Forces since 1958, they provide defence, paramilitary and police mobility solutions through their portfolio of light-to-heavy defence vehicles, including armoured troop carriers and high-mobility vehicles.
At Tata Motors, they are passionate about owning the road.
Passenger Vehicles
Tata Motors leverages its years of auto expertise to design creatively styled cars and SUVs that come pre-packaged with technology, high-end features, connected solutions, a best-in-class purchase experience, and the convenience of a seamless network for after-market service.
Their customer-centric approach has led to the development of the premium compact car Zest and hatchbacks Bolt and GenX Nano, which offer a never-before combo of technology-rich features, contemporary designs and rich ambience interiors.
At Tata Motors, they are accelerating towards a new horizon.
Facilities
Their growth is rooted in their ability to anticipate customer expectations and fulfilling them through advanced manufacturing processes, backed by leading-edge R&D.
Their private and commercial vehicles are produced on three continents, backed by world class R&D and design centres and top-of-the-line manufacturing technology.
They have come a long way. Over the past 70 years, Tata Motors has developed a deep understanding of customer needs and translated them into desirable products that are deeply appreciated by their customers. Their strong focus on excellence in manufacturing ensures that their facilities carry out every step in the manufacturing process — from design to production to assembly — with the highest standards of quality. Their R&D, design and manufacturing facilities are located in more than 20 sites across Asia, Africa and Europe. At Tata Motors, striving for perfection is an on-going and high priority target.
Manufacturing
Their manufacturing facilities have more than just state-of-the-art technology; they have the best and passionate engineering and quality talent working to produce superior vehicles. Striving for excellence is an integral part of the Tata Motors culture. Their plants are certified for world class manufacturing and quality standards. Their focus on automation and technology has kept them at the forefront of the automobile industry. That is why they are the leader in India’s commercial vehicle market and among the top vehicle makers in the world.
Design
At Tata Motors, design is vital simply because a vehicle’s colour, shape and features are crucial to its being bought. Their design unit in Coventry, UK, specialises in clay modelling, digital modelling and alias modelling, their unit in Turin, Italy, specialises in styling, architecture, packaging and surfacing; and their Pune unit takes over design execution from the technical aspect. Their recent offerings, Bolt, Zest and Ultra, reflect global design dimensions. While designing commercial vehicles, their designers focus on safety, maintenance and elements such as driver fatigue. Their designers bear in mind that to the man on the street, the vehicle must convey a trendy, trustworthy message. Tata Motors’ Ultra trucks offer global styling, enhanced driving comfort and fuel efficiency.
R&D Centres
Tata Motors’ mission is to offer the best vehicle experience to its global customers. Consequently, its R&D centres focus on various issues such as the look and feel of a vehicle, safety and efficiency and of course, fuel economy. The fruits of its R&D centres can be seen in its various products such as the Zest and Bolt and in its commercial vehicles such as the Ultra and Ace. Among their latest R&D centres is the state-of-the-art centre in Pune, one in the UK and another in South Korea. This international confluence of cultures brings a unique flavour to the end product, one that is unmatched anywhere in the world.
Sustainability and CSR
Tata Motor's commitment to sustainable development is deeply rooted in the legacy of the Tata Group - to build businesses with social and environmental consciousness and positively contribute to societal wellbeing.
Their approach is true to the tradition of the Tata Group, Tata Motors is committed in letter and spirit to Corporate Social Responsibility. It is a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact, and is engaged in community and social initiatives on labour and environment standards in compliance with the principles of the Global Compact. In accordance with this, it plays an active role in community development, serving rural communities adjacent to its manufacturing locations. Tata Motors believes in technology for tomorrow. Their products stand testimony to this. Their annual expenditure on R&D is approximately 2% of their turnover. They have also set up two in-house Engineering Research Centres that house India's only Certified Crash Test Facility. They ensure that their products are environmentally sound in a variety of ways. These include reducing hazardous materials in vehicle components, developing extended life lubricants, fluids and using ozone-friendly refrigerants. Tata Motors has been making conscious effort in the implementation of several environmentally sensitive technologies in manufacturing processes. The Company uses some of the world's most advanced equipment for emission check and control.
Tata Motors concern is manifested by a dual approach
- Reduction of environmental pollution and regular pollution control drives
- Restoration of ecological balance
Their endeavours towards environment protection are soil and water conservation programmes and extensive tree plantation drives. Tata Motors is committed to restoring and preserving environmental balance, by reducing waste and pollutants, conserving resources and recycling materials.
Reducing Pollution
Tata Motors has been at the forefront of the Indian automobile industry's anti-pollution efforts by introducing cleaner engines. It is the first Indian Company to introduce vehicles with Euro norms well ahead of the mandated dates. Tata Motors' joint venture with Cummins Engine Company, USA, in 1992, was a pioneering effort to introduce emission control technology for India. Over the years, Tata Motors has also made investments in setting up of an advanced emission-testing laboratory. With the intention of protecting the environment, Tata Motors has upgraded the performance of its entire range of four and six cylinder engines to meet international emission standards. This has been accomplished with the help of world-renowned engine consultants like Ricardo and AVL. These engines are used in Tata Motors vehicles in the Indian market, as well as in over 70 export markets. Tata Motors is constantly working towards developing alternative fuel engine technologies. It has manufactured CNG version of buses and followed it up with a CNG version of its passenger car, the Indica.
Restoring Ecological Balance
Tata Motors has set up effluent treatment facilities in its plants, to avoid release of polluted water into the ecosystem. In Pune, the treated water is conserved in lakes attracting various species of birds from around the world thus turning the space into a green belt. Tree plantation programmes involving villagers and Tata Motors employees, have turned acres of barren village green. Tata Motors has planted as many as 80,000 trees in the works and the township and more than 2.4 million trees have been planted in Jamshedpur region. Over half a million trees have been planted in the Pune region. Tata Motors has directed all its suppliers to package their products in alternate material instead of wood.
