History

Traversing in time to over a century ago, Wagh Bakri Tea Group was the fruition of the dream of a devout Gandhian, Shri Narandas Desai. An entrepreneur at heart, he started out in 1892 with 500 acres of tea estate in South Africa. Taking on the fine task of nurturing tea, passionately and single-handedly, he learnt the intricacies of cultivating and producing tea, along with the aesthetics and norms of the business. However racial discrimination forced him to return to India with nothing but a few valuables and a certificate from Mahatma Gandhi for being the most honest and experienced tea estate owner in South Africa.

Shri Narandas Desai's three sons Shri Ramdas Desai, Shri OchavlalDesai and Shri Kantilal Desai followed in their father's footsteps by joining the business. Till 1980 Gujarat Tea Depot continued to sell tea in wholesale as well as retail through 7 retail outlets. Also the first to recognize the need for packaged teas, the group launched Gujarat Tea Processors and Packers Ltd. in 1980. The company also started an office in Kolkata to oversee and check the purchase of tea at auction centers there.The corporate office of Wagh Bakri was inaugurated in 2006. It is a tribute to the founder that his vision is blended with a futuristic outlook, dedication and trust built over many years.

Manufacturing Infrastructure

Eco Friendly High Tech Tea Blending Plant. They possess a fully integrated and self-sufficient Plant sprawled across 60,000 sq. yards of land, amidst green farmlands. There is no pollution in their process and even tea waste is used as a fertilizer. The plant is operated by a team of dedicated workers and skilled professionals who ensure adherence to their Food Safety and Quality Policy. Strict and total inspection / verification of incoming tea is done to ensure complete conformity with the samples, which were meticulously selected during Tasting. A fully automated storage and reclaiming system, which is at par with the latest standards in the Food Industry ensures safe keeping and retention of quality.

The Blending unit comprises of fully enclosed, touch free, stainless steel equipment with on line multi-stage cleaning to render their product as safe as possible. The packaging unit comprises of machines with latest technology. They use food grade packing material, solvent free printing, touch free packing of the best available quality resulting in strong, attractiveand safe packaging which is their final presentation to the consumer.

Equipment

Great Technology for Great Taste. The real strength of the plant lies in its production capacity, supported by skilled professionals and a vast array of technologically advanced blending and packaging machines. The plant is equipped with highly sophisticated tea bag packing, carton packing and pouch packing machines. These modern machines not only ensure faster packaging but also help in retaining the taste and aroma of teas.These machines also offer tremendous flexibility in production.

The plant is well-equipped to produce packages ranging from polypacks of Rs.1 value to 5 kg, jars and cartons as and when the requirement arises. The huge capacity for raw material storage (40 lakh Kgs) coupled with a production capacity of almost 6 lakh packets per day, further strengthens the Wagh Bakri promise. The plant also has a captive power generating capacity for contingencies.

Wagh Bakri recently purchased a tea bag machine from Italy – a huge investment made especially for the benefit of its customers. The machine can make 250 staple-free tea bags a minute and has drastically reduced the production cycle, thus keeping the tea fresher. This state-of-the-art technology also ensures safety. Since the tea bags are meticulously tied with thread, there is no smell of metal and no fear of staples falling into the tea which also makes it possible to put the tea bags in the microwave oven.

Tea Research

Keeping increased customer satisfation in view, Wagh Bakri has now set up its own testing laboratory with "state-of-the-art" technology. This technology ensures that highest quality standards are met on existing as well as newly developed products. The laboratory is manned with qualified & competent professionals to match International Standards like ISO-17025. As a result, the laboratory is NABL Accredited for Chemical Testing.

Creating Value Through Social Responsibility. Wagh Bakri has created value in society through its social initiatives. The Vasant Narayan Desai Charitable Trust, set up in memory of the group's founder Shri Narandas Desai and Vasantba, donates generously to aid the downtrodden.

In 2001 when an earthquake shook Gujarat, the group worked non-stop to help the people here. It has also donated generously for polio eradication to the Sevani Suvas Polio Foundation.
